When the Raven Comes (Cindy Yang)

  1.  ‘When the Raven Comes’ is a 2D animated short film that tells a story of two old friends meeting up during the Mid-autumn Festival.
  2. The animated short film uses the Festival as a background setting to carry out the theme of friends and family gathering, in the meantime, directs the audience's view by using the perspective of the gathering of two old friends as the main plot of the story. However, it also uses the shot of people working non-stop during the festival in between to show that not all people could afford the luxury of resting.
  3. The creator uses pencil illustration artwork as the background of the animation. It really gives us a childlike feeling and a traditional sense at the same time. Also, the fact that the animation is acted in dialect helps deepen the cultural impression. In conclusion, this work informs us of the potential of creating a 2D animation by combining digital and traditional art tools.

The Stained Club

  1. 'The Stained Club' is a 3D animated short film that tells the story of an emotionally abused child, Finn with his physically abused friends.
  2. The short film uses stains as a metaphor for abuse. It shows the audience two kinds of abuse, one being the blue glittery stain that is on Finn, and another being the red and purplish splotches on his friends. The creator of the film uses a blue glowing particles spreading scene to present a shot of Finn being abused. It is visually appealing, at the same time, heartbreaking to look at.
  3. This work shows us the never-ending potential of 3D animation as the creators use cute 3D characters to tell a bittersweet and emotional story that includes the existing problem of the society (domestic abuse).
