Week Three

The Amazing World of Gumball ~ The Cringe (Studio AKA)

1. ‘The Amazing World of Gumball ~ The Cringe’ tells a story that compiles the awkward memories of Gumball and the Hot Dog Guy.
2. Studio AKA used different approaches to produce this piece of animation. For example, they used a 3D scene render at the beginning, a 2D animation on top of the 3D scene when the two characters met, and a stop motion puppet show in the middle of the story.
3. This animation shows me the potential of blending 2D and 3D by using 2D vector animation and stop motion. When good compositing is done, the characters’ story can be presented smoothly, at the same time doesn’t seem out of place.

UP: Married Life (Disney . Pixar)

1. ’Up: Married Life’ shows us the story of a lonely man, Carl and his deceased wife Ellie.
2. The animation is well-timed. It uses a lot of montage scenes, varying from their happy married life to the action of breaking the piggy bank (a glass bottle) for money. It also applies a three-act structure in this plot. Their married life as the first act, being told impossible to have a baby is the turning point, starting their saving for an adventure as the second act, Ellie’s sickness and death as the climax, and Carl returns home alone as the ending. 
3. This animation clip is essential to the movie ‘UP’. It uses bright colours, upbeat song, and happy characters to present the happy life of Carl and Ellie. As a contrast, the colour palette of the story is dimmer and Carl becomes moody and grumpy after Ellie passes away. It shows the background story of Carl and builds up to the character’s turning point later in the movie.

Final Chapter by Mayday (Animation: Grass Jelly Studio)

1. ’Final Chapter’ is an animated music video that shows the life of a busy man who regrets his action and pushes through the past for a second chance.
2. The theme of the project is about to cherish the moment with your family and loved ones. ‘Final Chapter’ presents a book as a metaphor for the life of a man. When the book is ending, so is the life of the man.
3. The animation studio used a unique style to create characters and 3D modelling. It was done to match up with the beginning of the story, where a man is reading a 3D picture book. Therefore, all the characters in the story are textured in a hand-crafted style. It informs me of 3D animation can be created in a unique art style as well.
