LiEat is a series of RPG games developed by Miwashiba who’s known for their unique pixel art style aesthetic. It follows the perspective of Efina, a newly born dragon lie-eating taking the form of a girl and the mysterious con artist Teo, as they explore new places and solve supernatural puzzles.
Considering all three games in the series together, I think the overarching theme was ‘acceptance’, accepting yourself and others for who they are, whether they’re a dragon that eats lies, or a sheep that eats people’s dreams, or a human who lies to protect others.
The games themselves are not long, but are so packed with story building elements and little interactions that it feels like a complete story. Pixel game RPGs are a genre in their own right, but LiEat manages to stand out with its gothic aesthetic style and gripping storyline. On top of that even the most irrelevant side character has a distinct personality and purpose.
Alicemare is another RPG game developed by Miwashiba in the same gothic pixel art style that includes exploration and puzzle solving. The story is about a young amnesiac who goes to live with a mysterious ‘Teacher’ and equally mysterious children.
The entire premise of the game is Allen, the protagonist, to help the other children by going into their dreams and sorting out their respective traumas. So the theme of the game seems to be bonding with and helping others, but also accepting people’s help and exposing vulnerabilities.
This game makes use of fairytales and incorporates a unique twist onto them with a set of puzzles on the side. Alicemare’s characters are quirky and eccentric to a fault, but the sheer randomness of the conversations and the character designs are part of what makes this game so memorable.
