Vocaloid is a singing voice synthesizer software that is the basis of an entire community of producers, artists, and fans brought together to express their creativity without limits. Kagerou Project makes use of the technology and its first release was in niconico in 2013. However, since then it has grown and expanded into CDs, light novels, manga, and even anime.
The story is about a group of people with superpowers related to their eyes, but what has endeared the fans to the story going were the vague but undeniable themes of loss and depression, but mostly of kindness. The character Ayano, or the ‘red scarf girl’, loved and cared for all the characters and in turn, they developed their ‘red eye’ powers and used it to help and inspire other people.
The field of vocaloid is vast and diverse, but Kagerou Project has managed to leave its lasting mark with its mixed-media empire. It’s hard to believe that it all started with one video with a synthetic voice and simple animations. This really emphasizes how important storytelling and character building and development is. Every character gets time to shine with their own songs and backstories, hopes, and ideals unique to them.
