Rationale

- My studio project would be about the use of VR technology and using it as a medium for storytelling. I hope to better understand how VR development works and what are the steps involved in creating a VR project. During my stay at my Game Design course I've developed numerous prototypes and the games that I enjoy creating have a common theme that plays with Psychology. In conceptualizing my ideas for my VR project I forsee a space where the user is fully immersed in this VR space and to be able to impart sort of life lesson. I believe the years of working with Unity would heavily benefit me for this project but will be learning new skills in relation to working with VR in Unity. Not only I like to create games but create Digital Paintings and 3D models as they are a part of creating game assets for Unity.

Context

- In the realms of game aesthetics I want to incorporate my art style into my VR project. Most people who have seen my work have said that I have a "painterly" artstyle to which I believe would be benificial for my end as it is a chaotic method but very tedious when doing rendering. A game that has a similar art style is a game called Transistor made by Supergiant Games. This game has a very clean and unique artstyle that can be seen through out the game level and through their art illustrations and its more prominent in their game Bastion as well.

Another game I want to takle is a game called Antichamber where this game is heavily psychological and their game mechanic is puzzle solving. I admire and spent hours in finishing this game as I wonder how they create such game with simplicity and yet with so much depth. I created games similar to this that plays around perspectives, puzzles and psychology to which can be found here ( https://kochijap.itch.io/ )

VR is something that always interests me and how artist use VR to showcase their work. Goro Fujita, an Illustrator based in California, has over 10 years of professional experience working in various fields of the entertainment industry such as animated movies, commercials, children's books, book covers, mobile games and Virtual Reality. His works are remarkable and inspires me to pick up VR as a tool to create my artwork in a 3D space, the program he uses is Oculus Quill. Throughout his works from illustrations to animations, there's always a story behind it to which I admire the most.

VRTOV is another VR specialist or a studio that specialises in VR storytelling which was recommended to me to check out. As I explore their website https://vrtov.com/ I've noticed one work that caught my attention to which had a very unique look to it. ASSENT is the name of the project that caught my eye. Diving into their processes in creating this piece I recall one technique they have used which is used through out the VR piece, 3D scanning. 3D scanning is a method that was introduced to me back in 2015 as something in their early stages. The way that you 3D scan things before was still in development as the program used was opensourced and the tool to scan things or people was a Xbox 360 camera. Fractal look was the results of 3D scanning as some details can't be picked up by the camera not only that but details of that object being scanned is not present in the digital space.

Method

- Working with VR will be challenging but this will enable me to learn something new in Unity. The work I will be producing in studio would help into the development of my ideal VR project. Creating prototypes would slowly enable me to learn bits and tricks on creating a VR project yet having access to a VR kit for me to use at home would be a challenge hence I'll start with AR in hopes that would be incorporated into the VR project. The AR kits thats avaiable to me and have dipped my toes into are the Leap Motion and Vuforia in Unity.

Production

- I'll try to sketch down my ideas and hope to create something that would support my VR development. Implementing my sketches or paintings and make them into 3D models that would be imported into Unity as an asset. This could be a workflow that I can capitalize on while I try to get my hands on a VR kit. Reading psychological books would help me create a story that would make the user question about human morality.. maybe but nothing is certain for now but these are the plans I want to take for this project.

I have made a test previously and recorded my test from my archived video process which I will pick up again and start AR production.
