Folio 2 Plan
Rationale: Intention
For Studio 1 Folio 2, I will be following up on all the work I focused on in Folio 1, and building upon in with the intention of creating an interactive game.
I will primarily be focusing on creating a system that relays a story by pointing and clicking, thus interacting with the objects. I plan to work on creating a parallax effect in Unity, the same way I created in my experiment in Game Maker. Additionally, I will be creating a Live2D portrait for each of the 2 characters and import them into Unity. I will hold off on the final asset creations until I’ve got the base mechanics sorted out with the help of the visual scripting tool Fungus.
My goal from the very start has been to make a game with as little coding and as many aesthetic illustrations as possible, which is backed by a gripping fantastical story.
Context: Field
My work will sit in the field of interactive storytelling in the categories of surreal fantasy but having it pointing back towards the human condition in the end. It would be somewhere between a visual novel and a hidden object game.
Some examples of short narrative-based interactive works are Yûrei Station by Atelier Sentô, You Left Me and I Woke Up Next To You by Angela He. These games share a common unique factor of having the player move and interact within a 2D environment themselves instead of moving characters and interacting with the world through them.
Method: Conceptual, Technical, Craft & Management
After thinking long and hard, I decided against incorporating many of the game mechanics usually present in hidden object games such as a section to collect objects but decided to stick with the main mechanic of pointing and clicking.
I also decided against having walls of text that the player has to wade through as is most VNs. Instead, there will be minimal and vague text, letting the player figure out the story through the graphics and interactions.
Production: Tools
I’ll be using Unity with Fungus as an add-on to create the main base of the game. All artwork and animations will be made by me on Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop, with certain illustrations being animated in Live2D.
