This is a film adapted from a literary novel by Ang Lee’s attempt at 3D technology. There are a lot of metaphors in the film, as well as cultural and religious differences. So when different people watch this film, there will be different Interpretation.
An amazing thing about Li Ang is that he presents the story completely, but unlike most directors- "I want to tell you what story I want to tell, what my story expresses, what truth or meaning it conveys", it presents multiple aspects in a philosophical way, and even causes disputes with the audience in interpretation. And he himself cannot accurately and completely say all the meanings he wants to express, but leaves the audience more room for imagination and thinking. Films are like literary works, in which everyone can find reflections on themselves and connect their own life with the work, so people with different lives can find the epitome of their own lives in different aspects of the work.
Back to the movie itself, 3D technology is an innovation and experimentation. Between real person and 2D, 3D has a subtle feeling. Real-life movies will break the barrier between reality and illusion. 2D directly conveys a virtual dream, while 3D gives people the feeling of being real and ethereal. The audience knows that it is fake from a rational point of view, but their emotion and perception will be deeply substituted with fake and real pictures, so as to make the audience have a double resonance from the picture and plot.
Metaphor is also used in the film, telling a cruel story is transferred to the adventure of a teenager. Ang Lee and the audience have their own different interpretations of tiger, orangutan, hyena, and zebra. The film also mentions their allusions— Humanity. The story of the sailor, chef, Pi and his mother who got on the lifeboat together and then killed each other. It is mentioned in the film that when people listen to Pi telling this story, they do not believe in the animal version, but at the same time they are shocked that the human version is too cruel, just like the tragedy of wanting to escape but unable to escape in reality.
The relationship between the tiger and Pi in the film is also intriguing. It can be the dark side of Pi’s inner world of humanity, it can also be the fear of Pi, or the terrible but tolerant nature, but no matter what it is, it inspires Pi and gives his courage to survive on the sea of hopelessness.
Good works are thought-provoking, and make people lose their enthusiasm for life due to certain truths, while inspiring people to live optimistically.
