Context
This week I was heavily inspired by music videos, including Michel Gondry’s for the Chemical Brothers song Star Guitar - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S43IwBF0uM
And also the music videos for the song Bombay by El Guincho - https://vimeo.com/15247292 and Riptide by Vance Joy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ_1HMAGb4k.
In Star Guitar, Gondry has identified specific beats and created specific images and symbols that relate to them, to then bring them all together in a single continuous video that visually shows the beat as it is played.
In Bombay images are not directly related to the music playing, and instead uses the beats of the song to cut rapidly between the different images shown. This then creates a video that tells multiple disjointed stories told next to each other.
In Riptide there is a combination of these ideas, with many images and stories being rapidly cut against each other like in Bombay, however similarly to Star Guitar the images are visually showing the song, with the video being a direct interpretation of the lyrics.
Method
I will be thinking of the concepts from these music videos to create a video that uses repeated clips that go for the same frame length to see if I can create a video that can be compelling and cohesive with hard cuts while not telling a story.
Response
I created a short music video that I think fulfilled its goal of remaining interesting without telling a story, by using rapid editing techniques and making small changes to the clip presented each time it is on screen.
