7. Flipbook Animation: Techniques & Mind-Blowing Examples

Although animation often involves advanced technology and high-end computers, an easy way to make an animated movie is to make a flipbook. A flip book or flick book is a book with a series of pictures that vary gradually from one page to the next, so that when the pages are turned rapidly, the pictures appear to animate by simulating motion or some other change.

In its most primitive form, a flipbook is an actual book, and each page is a static image. However, not all flipbooks are literal books. In the parkout flipbook animation, the creator manipulates paper sheets of various sizes to depict a runner practicing parkour in a cityscape. Another example is Little Red Riding Hood, the creator created a 3D environment with papers and use camera to press down these standing papers one by one to generate continious movements with one take. This form of flipbook borders on performance art given that extreme skill is required in flipping the sheets in the correct sequence.

Method :

Inspried by examples. We wondered if we could use dominoes to make flipbook.

Step 1 -  animation part, we(Wayne) drew the floating balloon in TV Paint  then export the animation as image sequence.

Step 2 - rint these images out with paper.

Step 3 - stick papers on cards, twist a little bit with some small tests to make sure cards can stand on the table.

Step 4 - set up.

Step 5 - record.

Reflection :

The subjects are out of focus. Meanwhile it doesn't looks like an animation
