In response to the theme of Place, I created an painting of a scene involving an abandoned cabin in the woods. I used adobe photoshop for both the initial sketch and the final artwork.

By creating this piece i've built up a narrative about the place and its inhabitant, where the cabin itself helps tell that story in the absense of the owner. Using the paintbucket, logs and half painted wall ive tried to create a sense of being lived in, but abandoned.

As a starting point i looked to some of the work by JRR Tolkien in his middle earth saga, where he would spend pages at length describing the detail about a place and natural environment, and its connection to its inhabitants. Tolkiens work manages to tell a story about its history and inform us about the characters that inhabit his world, without even having to directly show us the character. His world is its own character, and I think this is something that has been replicated in stories throughout the ages.
