Playable cardboard tetris

Theme: Play&Object

Context:

I want to try to create something in real world rather than digital works in past two weeks. I have collected many cardboards in my home for crafting, so I decided to make something by cardboard.

Tetris 99 is one of my favorite game and I want to make something "tetris" since last year. While the biggest problem is how to clear line in real world. I have some ideas but they are hard to excute in short time. So I have to change the direction of thinking - If a tetris game can't clear line, how could we play it? This thinking guided me to some funny tetris game I have looked before which have physics system. Although those game still provide function of clearing line, their core is physics and physics is the most easy thing to use in real world. So I decided to make a physical tetris.

Then the second problem comes out- how to prevent those blocks from falling down when they collide to each other? The solution I found is put a wall in front of those blocks. But since I don't have that size of glass, player will not see what happening inside. Then I got the final idea - use animation to simulate what happening inside.

Method:

Scissors,Burin,Cardboard,Color Pencil, After Effect.

Response:

It took me several days on cutting those cardboard. I don't have suitable tools even a ruler, so it is very hard on cutting. My scisors is a small scissors which smaller than my hand. It can only be used in cutting 7-8cm length. If I want more bigger piece, I have to use my tiny burin which used for plastic model. I finally finish those work and record a video then add animation by After Effect. This also my first time on After Effect. I learnt it by google and spent 8 hours on adding animation.

I tried to make all blocks appear under "Next" but it will takes me soooo much time and I don't think I can submit this video in time if I make that. So I just made first 4 blocks under "Next".

Reflection:

This is a great experience for me. Although cutting staffs is a nightmare, I still enjoy the process because whenever I made a step, I will satisfy with my works. Also I learnt how to move and rotate object in AE and this is a good beginning. What I want to try next is craft more blocks and make a stop motion animation with my cardboard tetris.
