A quick test of the free software VPT (Video Projection Tool), a basic, real-time projection mapping tool. The idea was to project something onto a book (the white box for the time being). Videos were some Winnie the Pooh footage I got off YouTube to test the software. The videos on the wall were pretty clear, but the video on the top of the box was quite blurry due to the angle of the projection. Will have to play around with the angle of the projector. Wanted to set up a video trigger so that the projection only played when motion was detected, but I had trouble getting that to work in the software (the instructions in the online tutorial weren't very clear).

Pros:

  • Relatively easy to use - great for beginners to get started in projection mapping
  • Ideal for simple objects like rectangular prisms and cubes
  • Set up was super easy, and was able to project something within minutes

Cons:

  • User interface can be quite clunky
  • The way to save work can be quite unituitive - I overwrote my current file with a previous file like three times! =.=
  • Limited to 8 videos in total - may not work for more complex projects
  • As it's a free tool, support resources are limited
