Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Inquiry: Visualising musical timbres through the movement of abstract shapes, lines, colour and forms.

Context: I'm heavily inspired by visual music animators, painters influenced by music, and graphic notation artists. Some example work:

  • Studie Nr 5 by Oskar Fischinger
  • An Optical Poem by Oskar Fischinger
  • Poka Graph by Mary Ellen Bute
  • Fantasia by Disney
  • Composition 8 by Vasily Kandinsky
  • Fugue in Red by Paul Klee
  • Sparrow's Wing, cello two bows by Randy Raine Reusch
  • Picnic by Cilla McQueen
  • Museik No. 10 by Henrik Colding-Jorgensen

Directions: Conduct a series of animation tests, focusing on one musical instrument at a time. I'm leaning more towards hand-drawn animation in Toon Boom.

Concept / Outputs: Combine my findings from my experiments into a single music visualisation of a classical music piece, or a series of short classical music clips.

Challenges: I don't have an animation background, and I'm very new to Toon Boom. I anticiapte there will be a lot of learning, mistakes and lessons learnt along the way.
