Presentation Notes

In studio3, I’m going to use the ideas from my studio2 project. The cover of presentation slide design came from studio2, and I’m going to use the soundtrack for studio3 project.

Start the semester I want to ‘Experiment of a combination of 2D and 3D art in VR space.’ I want to become a Concept Artist. When I search up a lot of professional Concept Artist inquiry they need

  • 3D experience and able to quick sketch architecture/character/creature/object/
  • Expert understanding of composition, colour theory, light and form
  • Ability to create concept art in a range of styles and genres
  • In-depth knowledge of art and design principles

The artist of this game has created a cute and creepy art style that I amide, I want to bring the cute and creepiness art into my project.

The game gives me an idea of allows my viewer to watch an object in the amount of time and trigger the animation, so the viewer can interact with the environment.

Artist Goro Fujita

Goro has created a huge amount of Quill animation that inspired me with my project. I also love the style of the work he made.

Concept Art

I have sketched out some ideas of how should my environment might look like, the shape of the trees, and the creepiness of the tree.

Then I start with different kinds of experiment with 2D and 3D art to present my thought of the project. I start with unity 2d skeleton to test out the new feature, I thought it can create a fast speed 2d animation than using TvPaint. But there is a bug that the bones suddenly didn’t work or not connect it. I stop using 2d skeleton. Then I get some suggestion from Pablo about Oculus Rift Tilt Brush, when I search up Tilt Brush it shows that program cost a bit. The program is great with all the funky paintbrush and all the effects, and it also recorded the process of the work. The only problems are when I output of the file to Maya it came out plain objects. I stop using Tilt Brush and start using Oculus Rift Quill to test the feature of sculpting 3d model also build animation from the program. The most important thing is Quill is FREE.

Quill Pro and Con

Pro

Able to sculpt and create animation in VR space/Fast-Paced workflow/Able to capture image and videos/Export to FBX file

Con

Only work on PC/Don’t have much brush as Tilt Brush/Can’t copy keyframes form another layer

There is just a list that I have problems I faced, also there is a problem I faced physically. Such as I can’t use VR long as I want to, my eyes can’t handle it. Also, the laptop can’t hold the program that long when I work on it for a range of time it will go slow or shut it off by itself.

Then I also did a test that’s from Pablo suggestion of using one mesh and two sides of texture, I try to work on Maya it work perfectly. When I bring it to Unity it doesn’t support both side material for new version Unity, Chris help me write a new shader to support my ideas. But I like the workflow in Quill and more possibility, so I decided to continue using Quill. When I try to import the Quill model into Unity, some of the layers didn’t show up and the animation didn’t work well in the Unity. When I play the animation in Unity it will flick off and disappear in some frames. I’ll continue to fixed the problem start to next term.

For my outcome, I decided to scale down the project. I’m going to make the animation in Quill VR and make a simple interactive in Unity.
