Studio One: Week 1 Related Work

Week One

A

  1. ’Model Citizen’ is the latest Dystopian Animated Short Film created by David James Armsby for his animated series. It brings the audience through a journey of ‘what and how to become a modern citizen of the Autodale’.
  2. It presents a dystopian society that is brainwashed to believe that only those fit to the category of a providing father, caring mother, scrappy young boy or girl are perfect and worth living. It also shows a society that discriminates against the older age group as their tradition. This piece of work shows that animation can be used to convey the deeper themes and moral although the style is cartoony.
  3. This work informs us of the potential of Blender as a free 3D software to create an impressive 2D animation using its cel-shading texture.

B

  1. ’Spiderman - into the Spider-Verse’ shows the story of the young Miles Morales growing as a Spiderman with the help of alternate versions of himself and eventually saving the multiverse.
  2. The story shows different Spidermans from the multiverse. It presents the theme of ‘anyone can wear the mask’ and anyone can invent themselves to be a better person in their life. It also indicates the importance of being resilient and finding your own true self to its audience.
  3. The animators alternated between animating on two and animating on one when animating. Some old-school techniques were involved as well. For example, the studio decided to use motion smearing instead of motion blur to create the comic style. The animated film shows us the great outcome of constantly pushing the boundaries and limitation when creating a 3D animation.
