WEEK 3

Storyboarding/Animatics 1.

Compilation of my first 3 animatics:

Context:

My first goal has been to match the emotional tone of Sean's voice in various shots. In week 2, when arranging audio, I got to pick the exact timber I wanted from each clip and then combine them into a single master. Week 3 was about accessing those feelings and projecting them onto a theoretical screen. I'm not a very good storyboarder so I relied on online tutorials to help me out this week.

Rationale/Motivation:

Now that I have made my storyboards and received feedback, I have a better sense of the headspace I was in creating these works. Ultimately they serve an illustrative purpose for me, supporting Seans voiceover very literally. I've been thinking along documentary lines in a very vertical fashion, pulling from my memory of documentary films like March of the Penguins and Life on Earth. In week 4 I moved on to thinking more laterally, having reflected on this.

Methods:

Used Procreate and Adobe Animate

Impact:

In terms of impact on the work, this week I learned what not to do rather than what to do, to be honest.

The intended impact of emphasizing the human/emotional/familial connections in these works was to draw attention to this small family relative to the prison industrial complex they have to function within. The characters are choosing to reconnect and find love despite adversity because their connection is a strength against a world that doesn't care about them particularly, especially Willis, who is a black man and former drug addict. The message I want to convey is that the reconnection is valuable despite a surrounding environment that does not value it.
