My initial idea was to have a completely colourless girl as a metaphor for feeling like an outcast, seeing everyone else in colour and being the only one without. But then I decided to go for a more literal story and go for a ghost girl.

Character Design Moodboard

I made a new mood-board for ghost girls and made a list of things they had in common such as, long hair, eyes that are not shown, and above all, white in appearance.

Character Design Idea A

These are some character concepts I made before I made the mood-board. At this point I was still considering having the skin a normal colour and only have the hair and clothes be colourless. However, I eventually decided against this so that the player could pick their custom skin-tones too.

Character Design Idea B

For my second attempt at character design I decided to make variations of the ghost girl with purple hues for shadows. I did some tests on Unity and found that the purple hue dulls the colours when the colour changes. Thus, I decided to make the ghost girl fully white, and let the shadows be coloured separately. 

I also debated between letting her fade into the background with her all white appearance so that she’s more ghost like.
