Sun, Moon and Seasons

DIRECTION SECTION

With this work, I intend to explore the ideas of beautifying physical objects with 2D animation through the use of AR

The idea is, essentially me creating 4 pairs of earrings based on the theme of 4 seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter. The physicals objects will be then displayed on 4 different stands. I will create 4 sequences of animation, each last for about 5 seconds, depicting the surrounding/background of each stands. Audiences will be able to view the animation through the use of AR

The focus of the work is in how 2D animation can add to a viewer experience when they observe physical objects, in this case, earrings. The reason I choose earrings is because they are the most popular physical objects human use to beautify themselves. Like how Jeremy put it, another layer of make up, but more physical. Throughout history, people have always used earrings to show off their status or personality. It is easy to notice them because they are worn near the face

The idea will be expressed through a series of artefacts with some animation and AR application. My ideal scenario is how they will be placed in an exhibition atmosphere where people can go around, look at them, and use their phone to experience the animation

“When finished, the work will develop the concept through..” (How will the finished work relate to the bigger concept?)

When finished, I hope the work will be able to expand another aspect in UX Design - enhancing the experience of users.

ARGUMENT/RATIONALE/GAP SECTION

The reason I want to do this work is because I want to explore ways I can use animation to  complement the design of physical objects. You know, add to the audience enjoyment, make things more interesting for them

If successful, the work will exhibit excellence in “making the experience enjoyable for people looking at physical objects”. The biggest field I suppose I’m aiming at is UX Design. But on the other hand, I also want to have some recognition for my earring design, my animation and how I combine both of them together

A quick Google Search showed me that not many people have explored these topics. I see a lot of 3D applications, and I haven’t seen anybody use AR with fashion items. I hope I can create a new application based on the use of fashion items. In the future, who know, fashion items may become a vase.

CONTEXT SECTION

The example I’m looking at 2D Animation with Augmented Reality by David Lai. I love how he use 2D animation to add on the appeal of a physical object. For example, with the toy truck, it is so funny and cute seeing the character jump in it. The animation is also very smooth. I hope that I can emulate how he use animation to make the object more interesting. I will bring what I have learned here to when I create my objects

METHOD SECTION

The materials I intend to use are

  • Earrings – tools, steel, beads
  • Stands
  • Paper, pen, fineliner, crayon, color pencil – to create the animation
  • Scanner
  • Photoshop
  • Spark AR
  • Spark AR test app

The process will be

  • Stage 1: make the earrings
  • Stage 2: create the animation
  • Stage 3: set them up in Spark AR

I hope that I will finish the Spring theme object by week 5, receive feedbacks, get all the technical issues out of the way. Then I will speed up and finish the 3 other objects by week 10, receive feedbacks and ready to launch

Because the idea is to examine how 2D animation can enhance the experience of physical objects, it is essential to use them. I want to talk about the reason why I decided to use AR. I have always find AR very fascinating. It is a tool that you can bring around (inside your phone), and through the lens of AR, anything can be made interesting. It is a bridge between our real physical work and the digital environment. Just like how I want to use it as a bride between physical objects and 2D animation
