Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity
Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

In this IOL class, I paired up with Faye since we barely have a chance to have discussions before.

During the talk, I learned what Faye might be interested in, and she had a rough idea of making a game that the player playing as a detective who has the special ability to see people’s soul colour, and the player will have to solve cases and find out the murderer or criminal. I thought that in this game, the user would have to investigate the crime scene themselves and think hard and observe carefully to find evidence. To meet the user’s needs mentioned above, I listed a few radical ways:

Some clever and dodgy enemies can hide very well from being found out; Players get limited information about the case; Hard to find the clues; The special ability that the player has only can be used once a day, but it will be very helpful, for example, some key items will attach the criminals’ soul colour so that the player can get more clues from it; Events might occur suddenly to disturb players.

After I got feedback from her, I generated a new solution, I added a few more things:

The player would need to hide in a place to use the ability, for examples, sometimes the criminal will come after the player since he/she destroys the clues; The mark of the soul on the items will fade as the time pass.

Reflection:
How did engaging with a real person change your direction?

Exchange ideas and talk to other people can make sure that I’m providing the things is what the person’s needs. People will also remind me if there is something wrong or redundant, or provide an alternative or even better ideas.

What was it like showing unfinished work to another?

I was worried that my work wasn’t clear enough to show it to other persons.

How did the pace feel (quick iterative cycle)?

The pace was actually fine for us, we quickly exchanged our ideas and forced us to brainstorm, ad we did well.

What stage would you re-visit (do next)

Think about the story and plots. Do more researches.

What is one thing you want to try tomorrow?

Do more research on the similar concepts from other pieces and see how others handle it.
