Aim

This week's theme is to animate motion, visualising the visual elements based on the beats in the music.

Method

I had recorded some atmosphere sounds from the orientation day of Semester 1 2020 at RMIT University Melbourne City Campus. There was an artist beating a drum in a specific rhythm and he encouraged people around to join him and follow the same beats. Playing the same beat in chorus kind of created a unique music, almost like an orchestral symphony.

Result

Continuing to learn William Kentridge's method of frame-by-frame Charcoal Animation, and taking a blob as an object, it gave me the flexibility to try squash and stretch, timing and spacing, anticipation, because I did not have any end-goal in mind about how I wanted the animation to be. I simply played with the shape and ensured that I match the movement on beats in the music.

Discussion

As I was animating this blob, and with the charcoal-like structure, the movement resembled the movement of a hive. With gravity in mind, I wanted to give the shape some character. As you can see, the object works against the gravity and tries to climb up, fails first few times, but gets through after shrinking itself significantly in the end.
