Week 3: Sound

Try to list as many adjectives and verbs as you can that describe or relate to the sound bite you have been given.

4A - Sweeping, chunks, gravel, swish, snap & crackle, pebbles

4B - (90’s phone, bird, chirp, ), (click, metrenome), (modem, rotating, clunking, steam, cogs, )

Aim:

  • To explore how sound in a 3D space can make simple visuals seem more complex

Rationale:

  • Sound is such a huge part of interactive storytelling, game feel and immersion that it needs to be more than just an afterthought.

Method:

  • Unity, develop a simple animation that responds to one or more of the sounds provided in an unexpected but relevant way.
  • I set up a scene in Unity and imported a few simple scripts I'd written for other projects. The scene contains a cube and a plane with some simple lighting. I used the animator to syncronise the deforming of the cube with the sound when the user clicks the cube.

Outcome:

  • I find the movement matches the sound really nicely. The cube appears to squash and stretch in a way which I think implies it is responding to the sound and perhaps also emitting it, although the source of the sound would be less clear without the user having to click on the cube to trigger it.
