WEEK 4:

AIM: To create an animation I thought would match the audio of Hunger (1973) a Peter Foldès short film that captures, in my mind, the eerie off putting tone I will be aiming for in my short film, especially in the second half.
METHOD:
Listen to the music through several times and imagine shots from the short that encapsulate that tone
Watch the short and consider what types of movement it uses and why it works.
create those shots in my animation Ipad App
RESULT:
A short comprised of a shot of the Husband touching her face, a shot of liquid pouring upwards and acting erratically to the music and a shot of his hand turning to liquid against her spacesuit (which is invisible inside the hallucination)
REFLECTION:
In rewatching the short, I didn’t really allow myself to be as experimental with movement as I should have. I think out of instinct, I wanted my animation to be believable, but thats not the kind of movement the short contains. “Hunger” is ominously computerized, and all of its movements are procedurally generated, and I did not capture that here. I should have watched the short several times, and allowed myself to make something that didn’t read as “realistic” to the eye. I think I honestly need to do this experiment again, or at least try making more procedural animation and see how I can recreate the effect in future weeks.
I really liked how the imagery of the droplets matched the music though. I didn’t put a tonne of thought into that. I drew liquids because they are relevant to the story and I love animating them, but actually the mid narrative cutaway to something that graphically and location-wise doesn’t match anything else, but emotionally matches the tone, created a very neat effect that I will certainly use later. got some neat Kuleshov montage psychology going, though not originally intentionally.
Also I really dont like the way the last shot turned out. That was rushed and you can tell. I was focused on getting the exercise done so I could move on to the assignment.
