Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Intention:

To explore the movement of character in different shapes.

Ideation:

-Test 1:

In Test 1, I used shapes to combine a running movement. Running
is one of the most fundamental movements in animation. I think it is necessary
to practice, which is the reason why I chose this movement as animation test 1.

In the initial drawing process, I only used some simple circles to compose
this character, while I think the basic graphics make the character look too
monotonous. As a result, I add some triangles on those circles to form a zigzag
shape
to make
this character more vivid.

In terms of the colors chose for test 1, I’m inspired by Matthew Collings’ the 1/6 rules of abstraction. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg3oQ_OqQ_o&list=PLM4S2hGZDSE5SOht-nruKVOvuR5lrCw2T>

And I’m also surprised with the content in this video, cause the most important rules is ‘no rules. In the past learning, I always learning how to organize colors in a same tone, either cold or warm, otherwise the production probably looks uncomfortable. So as for this animation test, I try to organize colors randomly. I combined different tones of colors and fill them in those shapes I’ve made. The result is much better than I expected, the character looks bright and attractive.

-Test 2:

Compared to the basic movement in test 1, I chose to use a quite humor and random movement to make in test 2. This movement looks quite funny, because I film it by a ‘dance’ from myself. In the most time of animation practice, I’d chose to use fundamental movement to practice, which probably helps a lot for my animation skill. However, as for this time, I would like to try something new, which is the beginning of this animation test 2.

Just like I expected, the whole process is interesting, especially the part when I film the ‘dance’. Then I make this animation test bases the movement that I’d filmed. The style was inspired by the ‘animated motion 4 part 4’ of Norman McLaren. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogtqj82D-T4>. There is an animated motion that made by lines and dots, which I think is interesting, this style could leave imagination to audiences, to let them think what kind of movement it is. As a result, I chose to use lines and dots to express this character in the test 2. This practice is totally new try for me, and I have a deeper acknowledgment how to use shapes in animation.
