Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

During Day 5 - 6, I was confused and not sure what I'm doing. From all the question 'why?' I thought I understand my project really well, but I realised that what I am drawing just all in my mind there is no purpose. I spend a long time to consider all the question I rewrote on Day 1.

What field does your work sit?

Frame by frame abstract animation. Using the colourful shape and movement to express the mood of depressing and relief.

Who are the outstanding practitioners within this field? What do you draw from these practitioners?

Through You _ Lucette Braune

https://vimeo.com/76324941

An abstract animation focuses on using colourful humans silhouette. Ever-time the character passed through each stranger the colours will blend then separate after the colour separated the character will be affected. The colour and the way silhouettes move express the mood of the person.

Happy Ending _ EunJu Ara Choi

https://vimeo.com/424188401

This work showing a story of a prostitute.  The scratches 3:00 to express the character’s feeling, the texture of the brush used with rough and red allow the audience to empathy the pain. I will look into the way to convey the empathy of my project.

The Tonko House Exhibition Loop Animation _ Seoro Oh

 https://www.instagram.com/p/B8WBsB7JlEj/

This is a short looping animation. I interested way used different shape and colour to express the ideas in this work. I would like to present my work with this method of showing the mood by the shape and colour in my project.

IQOO _ Masanobu Hiraoka

https://vimeo.com/323727730

The drawing of the animation has a strong animate style with a black outline and using a thin black line to shape out the tone. This work has inspired me through the movement of the shape and the contrast colours. Furthermore, one of the screens the animator used to blur the shape to show the distance in video 0:05.

Listen Senior Film _ Alexander Bernard & Marisabel Fernandez

https://vimeo.com/103697707

This work used filming technic and abstract animation to tell the story, they have to combine 2D and 3D animations. The work using the colours to show shadow and light, make the work seem like only using the 2D method to create the animation.

Does your work examine any gaps or extend any work in the field?

There are a lot of great abstract animations. A lot of the abstract animation is telling other people’s story, for this abstract animation I want to try to make the viewer feel relief and relax after watching the animation. Even though different people will feel in different ways. I want this animation is about the viewers is not about other people’s story.

Rationale Method

Rationale

What concepts you will examine in your folio work?

I as an animator I haven’t done much 2d full frame by frame animation. I thought this will be the chance to explored with my fame by frame animation skills. To start with abstract animation is because abstract animation doesn’t have to consider the bone structure or any muscle movement. I can start with explored the simple shape to improve my animation skills and understand the movement and timing.

What do you want your studio project to do?

Form my previous works all the story I have created form studio, they are all about the character has abandon from the world or bullied by close friends. At this last studio work, I would like to use the idea ‘Move on’ to show no matter how things go hard or depress we can always move on and get better. I want the audiences after viewing the animation to feel relax and calm. This project also going to be delivered in established for outdoor streaming for Benjis Place.

Method

What is the intention of this work?

From the start of 2020, the world has so many depressing news and issues. No matter form the viewer or form the people who are participated. This have affected a lot of people’s mental health feel down with losing jobs, someone passing away, and society is broken. If we don’t control those pressured it can destroy us. The intention of this work is showing that we can defuse the darkness inside us. Also, I would like to improve my frames by frames animation skills and experiences with the colour and movement in the abstract animation.

Objects & Outcomes

What are the tangible objects that must be made to articulate success?

The rules to publish the animation for out door streaming at Benjis Place. Enquired the animation minimum have to be 30 sec long, and with GOOD music. Since 25 June I have started discussed this project with my sound designer, and I have started working an animatic on the first week. On the second week, I would like to work on the colour and readjust the whole thing. I know to draw a 30-sec frame by frame abstract animation in 2 weeks is really hard.

For my Plan B, I have to finish colour in don’t have to add the light or tone on the 12 July. Therefore, I will give myself one more week to finish the whole animation that will be the 18 of July. For this studio I just have to hand in the rough look of this abstract animation will look like.

Folio 1: Storyboard/Animatic/Music

Folio 2: Colour/Refinement

To-Do List

  • Keep drawing to finish the animatic

  • Meeting with my sound designer

Rational

Context

Methods

I will keep using the program clip studio on my iPad, this is the only thing I can draw animation with.

Outcome

I am still trying to finish the animatic.

Summary

The workshop is really intensive, at the start of the week I just want to keep drawing and hopefully, I can finish the work on time. After the presentation, Kate has asked me what is my rationale I was lost and confused. This have stop me from drawing for a long time. While wondering why I am doing this and stressing don't have enough time for the work. At the same time, my sound designer have sent a new soundtrack. A lot going on.
