Context: Kant and his buddies are not happy. So am I.
Kant, sipping his tea, argues that humans are only able to apprehend reality in relation to their perception. He is not happy about this idea of Speculative Realism that rebels against his idea. With his buddies sitting at the high table for legendary philosophers, he looks down to Quentin Meillassoux who is arguing that reality does exist outside the Anthropocentrism because reality can change completely without warnings and reasons. Pressing his book of After Finitude: An Essay on the Necessity of Contingency against the face of one of his Speculative realist philosophers, Meillassoux is trying to defend his point. There are other reasons to disagree with Kant's idea. Graham Harman throws a biscuit at Meillasoux, signaling him to get his book of his face. He stands up and offers “Object-oriented Ontology": Everything, including human, can be considered as objects, and that an object has some sort of “sensual” traits with which objects can interact with each other. He then puts his essay of The Well-Wrought Broken Hammer on the table to prove his point. Iain Hamilton Grant, Ray Brassier, and Alberto Toscano nod as they listen to the discussion. They too, are waiting for their turn to speak up.
This theme is challenging because it requires folks to think “objects”. Like Yoko Ono when she works with objects. To be honest, it is extremely abstract and unclear. What does it mean by just “object”? What is the relationship? Communication in what way? Why is Max mentioning the nail and the hammer? *Insert confused Jackie Chan.
Revisiting the examples in the slides, the Seinfeld’s Nothing super cut makes my gears turning: Human agenda but not human interpretation.
Method: Perhaps a mess could tell a thing or two. I then look up the hoarder’s houses, collectibles and whatnot. I look down to my drawers. It is already disorganized. I pick a good angle and snap a picture.
Programs used: Android photo edit apps.
Response: I shall call this photograph "Emergency". For a lone international student away from home to a foreign land, this photograph represents the whole survival kit.
