Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

In response to the theme this week, I created an AR animation, which is triggered by the plant in my room. I took a picture of the plant and used it as the based layer for the animation. I crated a clip where a mini character interacting with the plant and the water.

I aimed to look at the structure of the plant, leaves and bottle and water, as environment instead of objects. Aside from the size contrast, the interaction between the plant and the character enhance the idea that the plant is an environment. The character is doing some activities in the surrounding. It is interesting to see how the size difference, character response and environment work together to form a simple narrative with many potentials. I decided to put the animation in AR to create the size contrast between the character’s surrounding and mine (my room by the window). The size contrast between two surroundings also play a kind of narrative element.

Similar concept can be seen in The Secret World of Arrietty, an animation by Studio Ghibli. In the film, Arrietty and her tiny size family “borrow” almost everything from the human house, where they live under. Due to the size difference, many common human tools/ objects are utilized differently in Arrietty life. The interactions with surroundings are also different; where the table or chair is just a piece of furniture for actual size human, but for Arrietty and her family are obstacles as high as mountains they have to overcome to get their food.
