THEME:

Time As Material

CONTEXT:

Abstract time. Captured Time. Fictive Time.

Reflecting on the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood in my Studio 1 work, I have explored the meaning and morals of the fable throughout time/history.

I found that as time moved forward, social standards and morals changed, along with the context of how themes in the story were read and interpreted. In short, artists who retold the story at different times in history interpreted the meaning of Little Red Riding Hood’s themes differently - meanings related to gender, sex, freedom and power have been challenged in various iterations of Little Red Riding Hood – a character who, over time, even became popular in pornographic films.

Other themes such as capitalism and greed are also reflected upon in more recent versions of this legendary, and traditionally cautionary, tale.

METHOD:

“Little Red MashUp”

Stitch various visual representations of Little Red Riding Hood the character together using graphics (paintings, illustrations or photos) from the past and present in order to reflect her changed symbolism over time and perhaps provoke our thoughts on what she may become.
