HEME: Character, Place and Events

Imaginary Behemoths: https://www.reddit.com/r/ImaginaryBehemoths/comments/a5kfts/christmas_tree_by_boris_groh/

I was always fascinated by these subreddits, as they can evoke an emotional response with its characters that seem to have a historical relationship with its environment and events that have passed. Their massive size, oozing with mystery gives these images a strong sense of mystery, and for viewers to imagine different narratives within it.

METHOD: I used photoshop to create a static scene depicting a character, with the environment and surrounding elements hinting on how a character may be transformed by past events in its environment.

RESPONSE:  An image of a giant redback spider that has collected various bicycles in its web, while embellishing its own body with bicycle parts. The character, the redback spider, spurned unsuspecting rider's bicycles into its web, using the bicycle parts as protection or trophies for its own body. The image intends to incite viewers' imagination on how the redback spider trapped its initial victims, how the spider grew to a gigantic size, all the events that led up to it collecting the bicycles, and what it intends to do as it collects more bicycles in its future.

REFLECTION:

This week's theme was very relevant to me personally. Just before this class, I had a very close encounter with a poisonous redback spider, as it was lurking on my parked bicycle. That life-threatening event was surpassed by me, losing control of my bike on the way to class, and deforming its front wheel in what seems to be like a freak accident. If the front wheel didn't get stuck on a pothole and got deformed, I would've sped through the highway which would be even more dangerous to my health. These two brushes with death events would forever transform my mentality with riding bikes, riding safety, where I would park them. The redback spider encounter would also make me more observant of my surroundings. So while tackling the week's theme, I wanted to incroporate both the redback spider, and my own bicycle in the photo. The background image I used was an actual photo I took while riding my bike on the way home, on a really spooky and foggy time past midnight, and thought it was the appropriate image to incite imagination.
