CPS week 1 Observation

http://magistudio.net/work/cps-week-1-observation-1ce72a

  • Topic:  Observe lines and shapes
  • Context: Lines in the campus from a birds view. I want to observe the structures from a very high position so that I can't see much details but only lines and shapes. But I fail to get the permission of getting on a roof of the highest building. Then, I decided to find a google map image from a satellite, which might be more better than I find a high building. When I Ignore the details but focusing on the outlines of the building,  I find a very different sight from the buildings that I familiar with.
    • Dailyoverview Studio. This term refers to the sensation that astronauts experience when given the opportunity to look down and view the Earth from outer space. They have the chance to reflect on its beauty and its fragility all at once. That’s the cognitive shift that we hope to inspire, their artworks: http://www.dailyoverview.com/allprints
  • Method: I screen-record the Satellite view of  RMIT city campus from google map. Then, I cover a paper on the screen and drew all the line that I saw through the paper. I don't focus on the details and colours.
  • Response & Reflection: During the drawing, I don't know what the structure is, because the map looks very obscure through the paper. But it prevents me from focusing on distinguishing what structures I am drawing, so  I can only portray the pattern. And, if l make a mistake, I won’t correct it. After I fill up the whole empty space, I observe the patterns that I draw. I import in photoshop and a layer to colour it, which is trying to give a texture of the lines.

CPS week 2 Tinkering

http://magistudio.net/work/cps-week-2-tinkering-5

  • Topic:  Unity shader graph test
  • Context: unity shader graph test. Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar9eIn4z6XE
  • Method: I follow the tutorial about how to use Unity shader graph create a luminous outline of the robot model. The model is unity default. Then, I try to make the colour of outline continuous changing. I also try to display the changeable colour on the body of the third model. Make them more like some colour-shifting pattern.
  • Response & Reflection: It’s my first use the shader graph in Unity. So I start with the tutorial and try to move a little bit further, which is make the changeable colours of the outline.

CPS week 3 Found Objects

http://magistudio.net/work/cps-week-3-found-objects-5

  • Topic:  low-poly Hina doll modelling
  • Context: Hina dolls are used to display and celebrate Girl's Day in Japan. Dolls represent the emperor, empress, attendants, and musicians and so on. The doll I modelled is empress who dresses in delicate traditional costumes.
  • Method: I build the model via Maya and I try to reduce meshes of the model. In order to get a low-poly model, I keep the lines of the model as less as l can. The traditional costumes are quite frustrated, I have to keep it in the correct shape but use fewer faces. Finally, I give it a default material and render it.
  • Response & Reflection: I inspired from a Japanese animation <Mirai>, which literally means the future. There is a very interesting plot in this animation is the father forgets to put back Hina dolls after the Girl’s Day, which might cause trouble with the girl’s marriage in the future. Hina dolls are presenting to wish their daughter have good health. I am really interested in Japanese traditional costumes. The costumes have a lot of beautiful patterns. After building the model, I feel like I can import it into Unity and use the shader graph to explore to shade it with changeable Japanese traditional textures. I might do this in the next term.

CPS week 4 Place

http://magistudio.net/work/cps-week4-place-3

  • Topic:  Impossible pipes
  • Context: I am fascinated by the space structured by the crisscross pipes that hanging on the ceiling, so I wonder to use those pipes to create an impossible structure.
  • Method: I take a photo and add a new layer in photoshop to draw. In order to get the realistic light and shade on an impossible structure, I draw my brush instead of stamp tool.
  • Response & Reflection: It was quite frustrated to draw those detail on the pipes to make them as realistic as possible. Finally, it seems to achieve that condition. People can't tell the difference between the real and the fake. Compare to the original pipes, I did change a lot. To make the work more interesting, I added a couple of small black guys sitting or standing or doing something on the pipes, as well as some birds, which all based on the impossible space that I created. I also make a loop animation.

CPS week 5 Objects are not exhausted

http://magistudio.net/work/cps-week-5-objects-are-not-exhausted-6

  • Topic:  Watch and Time
  • Context: Watch is always related to time, the minute and hour hands are keeping rotating on clockwise. So I use a black man as a metaphor of the hour hand(or minutes hand). As time goes by, the man keeps running in the watch. While the watch is assembled to the watchband, it's the time for me to wear my watch.
  • Method: I start with separating watch from watchband. Then, I animate them on different layers in after effects and export a sequence to TVPaint. I draw the frame by frame animation in TVPaint.
  • Response & Reflection: I’m trying to animate the time. Time goes like a running man. He needs to keep running to drive the watch. When the watch moves to the top, It’s time for me to wear my watch and start a day.
