CPS Week 6: Folio 1

Week 1: Observation

This was my favourite response so far. It was so refreshing to try 3D photogrammetry as it was so new to me and it was so much easier than I expected.

I loved the images I made of the apples. They look beautiful and imperfect and I certainly relate to still life painters such as Rachel Ruysch who often remined us of our own mortality by painting the state of life as a transition to decay.

Week 2: Tinkering

What fun to jump in and play with Construct 3 without worrying too much about the outcome.

I love the practice of tinkering and do not do it often enough. This should definitely become a priority in my work as it showed or reminded me that great ideas or projects don’t just come from thinking about them but DOING them.

Week 3: Found Object - Forms are not limited to their intended site or uses.

Dadaism is a great place to look when you want to learn about art made with found objects.

“God” is a hilarious example:

I do like working with found objects, but wish I hadn’t tried to bake a whole pie in this exercise, instead of just a slice of it.

Besides using an object to inspire a creative piece (or pie as it were), this week’s exercise made me reflect upon my inclination towards creating fully formed and polished pieces of work. While this is a good thing sometimes, I think focusing on smaller creative elements is instrumental for a healthy arts practise – flexing parts of the creative mind and helping to grow skill sets without getting bogged down in all the loose ends that need to be tied.

WK 4 – Explore Place, Make with Place - 'The Lift'

I am starting to notice that I like to think about perspective – not necessarily a literal perspective, but more a user or viewer’s sense of the world/ the idea of order/ things may not be what they seem.

Playing with these themes helps users/viewers/audience to engage with a piece of work because they are experiencing something new/are taken by surprise / are not sure what is coming next, and if they want to know they will have to keep paying attention. These states can point to questions like “Who Am I?”, “What Am I Doing Here?” or “Am I going to learn something new about myself or something I thought I already knew?”.

CPS Week 5: Objects Are Not Exhausted

http://www.magistudio.net/work/subtaculous-experiment-1

Object-Oriented Ontology – it was a stretch for me not to anthropomorphise in the exercise or to use narrative (my choice). I certainly enjoyed this stretch though and I even managed to make a slice instead of a pie (I think, though perhaps it was a rather large slice).

This week’s exercise inspired a whole new set of ideas for me which I may or may not pursue in future.

I like the idea of “Mundane Madness”: For example, I could use augmented reality to create an experience where you can paint rainbows on the floor while vacuuming! Dish washing gloves could become animated puppets and unicorns could trot around you as you sweep the floor with your tired old kitchen broom.

So even though I once again favoured video over other mediums of choice (I suppose because it’s what I’m familiar with), I have noticed that my thinking about potentials in other mediums has started to branch out as I become more familiar with other platforms and production tools.

Other Conclusions

I’m still scared of hand-drawing but I’m much closer to trying more of it than I was at the start of Folio 1.

Many of the exercises have helped me in Studio 1.

Many of the ideas I’ve tried in CPS I have discussed with fellow members of either VR Club or Projection Club.

CPS has helped my subvert logic, try new things and take more risks. It’s been invigorating, inspiring, though-provoking and very good for me as a practitioner.

At the very least, doing the sorts of exercises we have been doing in CPS is something I plan to take into my own regular practice going forward.
