Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

In response to the theme of setting, I made a VFX video using footage of my home and some footage ripped off Youtube, namely some footage of the ocean, in order to vastly change the setting of my house. My mind has been wandering to this place while I've been stuck inside for the quarantine and I thought a lot about how different my life would be - how the setting effects the character (me).

I didn't think it would look any good at first, but I found that the very simple effect actually brought about a pretty profound change in how I saw the footage (and I suspect the sound of the birds and the waves added to this feeling). I showed that it's actually pretty easy to change your setting dramatically, even if you only have a couple of hours and some simple tools.

I made two versions, one plain one https://vimeo.com/400811127/a92a342d8 and one with effects: https://vimeo.com/400818947/f7b24fe7c0. I thought by adding some cartoony effects to the footage of my house it might contribute to the eye-tricking, emphasising that the viewer is in another world. Not sure it really worked the way I wanted it to.

I have been watching a whole lot of before-and-after CGI videos on Youtube- like this one from The Great Gatsby (2013) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPDTSYR853U. I find them strangely calming. I wanted to replicate this before-and-after style so the viewer could see the two right next to each other to emphasise how powerful the effect can be.
