Method

Instead of using the item that I brought to class (glass dip pen), inspired by the discussion of Duchamp’s iconic Urinal work, I decided to approach and use the spinning chair in the classroom. Using the chair as the artwork or a method of making the art.

Context

(Don’t ask me how) The spinning chair reminded me of a Potter’s wheel.

Response

The chair could, obviously, spin. It reminded me of some videos that I had seen on Instagram that features paint on potter’s wheel, which artists use to create amazing spiral art and satisfying videos. I attempted to achieve the same result by having the idea of putting a bright coloured object on the chair and video it (and edit it to make it 20x faster perhaps).

However due to my lack of sleep, my short attention span became shorter and when I saw the piles of post-it notes on the other side of the table, I just started to play with them and abandon my initial mission. They were brightly coloured, and have 3 colour variations (yellow pink white), which then I started to stack (by stack I mean trying hopelessly to stick them on top of each other with the dried out stickiness) like a puzzle piece. While coordinating some colours, I somehow got reminded by the fact that I could probably use these post-its for the spinning chair idea.

I tested with one yellow post it on the middle of the chair, and instead of taking a video, I decided to use the livefeature in the iPhone camera. It takes both a picture and a video (a somewhat gif) and using the long exposurefeature available, I manage to create some satisfying looking patterns. It started with one colour, then two, then I put the whole stack that I created initially onto the chair, and couldn’t be more happier with the results.
