Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

I picked a couple empty pocky boxes and colour pencils to make a stop motion with it. After a failed attempt at keeping the phone camera steady and balanced, I decided to use a combination of images and digital art to create an experimental animation.

I was initially inspired by my favourite stop motion video channel on youtube SHIP  but later turned to speed-paint videos and used a mixture of both.

My process was to take pictures from my phone camera of every colour pencil with its head out in individual frames, and then screen record a digital drawing with the exact colours of the colour pencils, and then edit the footage and photos in After Effects so that it looks like the colour pencils popping out were in sync with the colours used in the digital drawing.

Even though a lot of things didn’t go according to plan:

  1. Stop motion idea was a complete fail in so many different levels
  2. After Effects key light effect wouldn’t pick out the white background
  3. The screen recording cropped out the bottom of the digital drawing
  4. Colours in the photo and drawing looked different
  5. The white backgrounds blends awkwardly

I ended up liking the result, especially since it’s not what I planned on having as the outcome.
