Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

In response to the theme of week 2, Tinkering, I have brainstormed and created several different iterations of the rules for my card game, which I’m currently working on for MAGI Studio 1. The material I use is simply pens and paper.

At first, I was hesitant to jump in. Originally in the lecture of the class, Max said that when you tinker, you shouldn’t have a concise aim in your mind. On the other hand, my aim is very clear: to brainstorm and create the rule for my card game. The direction is completely different from the get-go. But at last, I remember the spirit of MAGI (just do something) and decide to continue

Overall, the whole ordeal can be divided into 2 rounds: brainstorm the rule with the context of the game in mind, and brainstorm the rule without the context of the game in mind.

For the first round: brainstorming with the context of the game, I go back and forth between trying to come up with the rules and trying to fit them back to the theme of my game. This later proves to be very unproductive because I need to think of numerous key points at the same time. I also commit a mistake by trying to copy the gameplay of some existing games. Later on, I decided to consult with Kate about the matter and we both decided to put the theme of the game aside and think of the rules first.

With the second round, my mind is now clearer and I found a better way to work around my idea. I finally am able to write down a gameplay that I’m satisfied with despite all the struggles.

Because everybody has done this brainstorming exercise before as a creative practitioner, I feel that it is hard to give a specific name. So as compensation, I’m going to introduce some of the card games that have inspired me to create the rules of the game: The Sheriff of Nottingham, Coup, Skull, etc.
