THEME
Tinkering as Method

METHOD
Character Design Drawing Game

‘Finding’ or ‘Extracting’ characters out of random shapes. I cut out the shapes randomly from coloured card and stuck the shapes onto a fresh piece of paper. Looking at these shapes I tried to see a character. As I drew a character from the first shape I tried to apply the same theme to the rest of the shapes, letting the theme of each page emerge naturally from play. For example, on one page I saw a dog in the first shape. I applied this emergent theme to the other shapes too. The second page, the emergent theme was Men with Monocles and a Big Schnoz. The third was simply, blissed out detachable head weirdoes but I had to include a whole or at least half body. This exercise was a good way to loosen up the way you think something should look like and finding new forms to make interesting characters.

CONTEXT
Art forms that recontextualised forms or ideas.

- Collage = Moon Patrol
- Found Objects = Marcel Duchamp (and his ‘Ready Mades’)
- Drawing Games = ‘Exquisite Corpse’
Christoph Niemann = ABSTRACT SUNDAY series = an exercise in seeing things in different ways, extracting an image from random objects.
