In response of the theme of 'Tinkering', I created two 'tribal' inspired tattoo "Taniwha" (Mythological beings of the Māori indigenous people of New Zealand) using pencil and paper for a 'dragon-like', pen and my arm/skin for a 'spider-like' being based upon my own background.

By focusing on individual shapes and their own 'flow', using tessellation to assemble and reassemble overall images, I showcased the uniqueness of 'tribal' designs, inspired by my own native culture the Māori in New Zealand. To simulate a close experience to actual tattooing, I decided to embrace the finality that comes with it on skin/paper, and set myself a challenge to not erase or wash off lines/markings, and to 'tinker' with the 'mistakes' instead.

Similar work, has been produced by "The Black Hat Tattoo Studio", and other Māori natives in New Zealand, whose tattoo culture explores the theme of individuality and identity through the shapes or "Koru", as they are also named. (Curved, spiral, hooked shape of an unfurling silver fern and is symbolic of new life, growth, strength and peace.) With this, it is possible to identify the family of the tattooed self and or other personal accomplishments or meanings. (Brothers, sisters, marriage, chief, elder ... etc) These tribal markings are not only limited to tattoo's but also in the form of soap carving, a native popular culture passed on in primary schools today.
