CONTEXT

I’ve always loved Jon Conway’s paleo art, it rides the line between simplicity and complexity beautifully in his use of texture and light as well as his strong grasp of form and anatomy. His work on raptors is of specific relevance to my own work this week, as I love the very ‘bird’ silhouettes he gives his raptors. I took inspiration for this when I was designing my own, though mine is something of a generic ‘raptor-ish dinosaur’ rather than a true representation of a particular species.

METHOD

Create a hand drawn animation in adobe photoshop using only rough sketches with a good amount of movement.

RESPONSE

I ended up with two responses for this week, one where the animation ends as the bird hops away from and another where the raptor turns into and mirrors the bird (the former is the gif shown as the main image in my MAGI upload and the latter was added as an attached file). I chose as my response as I had the idea of the modern acting in concert with the anachronous in relation to this weeks theme. Birds are after all just derived dinosaurs, specifically from the same line as raptors. I had a false start in class with an animation I really wasn’t happy with that was discarded, and while I’m not totally happy with how my second and third attempts came out it was still a useful exercise in a slightly more involved animation that I’ve previously completed.
