THEME

Explore place, make with place

METHOD

I intend to take a series of photographs on my iPhone and then redraw them using photoshop with flat colours and no line work. Having done this I’ll be able to manipulate the palettes to explore colour and tone when setting the atmosphere and character of a physical place.

CONTEXT

Cassie Matias’ landscape photography is beautifully framed and composed, and her eye for colour and tone creates images that feel like an idealised but not deceptive portrait of locations.

Francisco Riolobos does gorgeous illustrations, specifically pertinent to this weeks theme (to me) is his work featuring dinosaurs in suburbia. The introduction of the unusual to the everyday changes the character of the places he illustrates, and the way that he draws them (serene, not out of place) really adds to the effect.

RESPONSE

I ended up chasing my tail this week, I really liked the effect of the buildings windows changing from blue to yellow and thought it’s shape lended itself well to my idea of quickly swapping colours. However, as I was in the middle of working on a series of swatches I really Francisco Riolobos’ paleoart and thought it would be more interesting to create a composite of something weird in a familiar place. Looking through the photos I’d taken I had the idea of a creature coming from/made out of the ivy on building 2, but having shifted focus so late didn’t have time to bring the concept to completion.
