Forces

Method

I picked 3 constraints from the rules that we came up with as a class:

1. Use phone application

2. Visualised sound

3. Everything is dot

I used Pixel is Data app to abstract a photo (Figure 1) that I downloaded from google and then I took the abstracted photo (Figure 2) to Cinetype app to make it in to a video, after that I exported the video to Glitche app and manipulated it with the mirror filter in response to music after that I screen recorded the whole thing.

Context

I looked at artists that make generative art in touch designer for inspiration.

In my research I stumbled upon an article about avoiding decision fatigue which I found really interesting and relevant to the theme of forces:

you’ll know what it’s like to be paralyzed by innumerable opportunities. What restrictions do is take away some of the choices available to us, and with them, the paralysis of choice that stops us from getting started.

We love trying things that seem counterintuitive at Buffer, but we especially love examples of how counterintuitive approaches can produce great results.

We’re conditioned to think that more choice is always a good thing, but in the past few years, studies have discovered something called decision fatigue. The research helps explain why decisions are so much harder at the end of a work day and why we’re tempted by the candy in the checkout lane after a marathon grocery trip.

Our cognitive resources are regularly depleted because we’re fighting an uphill battle every day — physically and mentally, both at home and at work. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. When we understand decision fatigue and how to combat it, we are able to make better choices and free our cognitive resources to solve big problems and spark fresh ideas.

Response

Weirdly I found working with limitations very liberating in terms of decision making. The possibilities of working with phone apps are broad and lots of great works can be done just with these apps. I had so much fun doing this work. There is a link below of me VJing with the app.
