Context

Abstract imagery – forms pulled from observed objects, pulling inner meaning out, going beyond the quest to re-present what has already been presented. (Tunner,2003).

Abstraction in animation is one of my favourite part when it comes to finding idea and images to represent the implication. Thus, I took the week them to investigate the way of making one short and simple animation to describe the feelings “having a bubble tea after a while”.

Method

Sound recording and edited in Adobe Audition and drawing animation in Studio Clip Paint.

Response

Just when I receive the cups of bubble tea from delivery, I unpacked them and pulled out the recorder to record all the sounds I made while enjoying the drink. The recorder supposed to work from the beginning when I start drinking until I finished everything. But for the first run, all the sounds I recorded were low and plain, thus, I had to grab another cup and start the recording over again. This time, I tried to amplify/exaggerate all the sounds I could make and that seemed to work better.

After that I bring them to Adobe Audition for adjustments. Some parts were cut out, some of the sounds were enhanced and I also had the noise removed/ eliminated as much as possible. I wanted to make the sound somehow familiar but unrecognisable, since it made no sense to me if they would reckon all the sounds immediately when they observe the information.

When the sound file was ready, I have it imported to Studio clip Paint where I intended to animate as I go over the layer of sound.  I simply broke down the bubble tea part into simple elements base on the resemblance of shapes, without thinking much about them.

Reflection

This was a unique experience for me to approach the abstract animation by exploring a playful and spontaneous alternative without thinking much about the implication or metaphors. As I just animated as I go in a short amount of time given, I did not allow myself much time to really think about it, but most of the shapes were visualized based on the elements that I observe.

I felt like I should have not revealed the image at the end since it seemed to take away the feelings of having a strange adventure. Looking at the result, even it was very sketchy and basic, I still do not want to push it further or refining it. Considering what “Play” is in this project to me (which is an exploration, experimentation and a chance to evoke creativity out of me spontaneously) perhaps this is as far as I want to go.
