THEME

Play and Body

CONTEXT

People always use the body to present meaning. In early civilizations around the world, people use their bodies to create movements, dance or play musical instruments to perform rituals with specific meanings. Those activities remained nowadays and many performance artists use the body as a clue to create performance art. Japanese artist Sachiko Abe‘s paper-cut performance(https://www.rituals.com/en-us/mag-rituality-leaving-a-paper-trail.html) gave me a deep impression. She was a patient with strong depression and tend to commit suicide, but finally, she found this paper-cut way to meditate herself. So, I believe that body performance has strong power to express and to cure the mind.

METHOD

Since I don't know how to code, I chose to use scratch to connect some simple commands and associate the soundtrack that I think suits my theme. Then I used the Makey Makey kit to build a tree-like device.
Finally, it is like using a performance-based way to create the meditative atmosphere I want.

RESPONSE

On this topic, my initial idea was to design a game that can be played with the body. According to the requirements of the level, the player twists the body to achieve the goal. Its principle is a bit like the traditional family game twister. However, in the process of tinkering, I feel that the strange changes in the body are like some ceremony. At the same time, I also faced the problem of not being able to code. I can only use scratch to do some simple instructions.
In these cases, I want to try whether I can use the Makey Makey kit to practice a prototype that can be used for the ceremony. My inspiration came from, in ancient China, there was a musical instrument called a chime. The ancient chimes were mostly used for court performances, and they were rarely circulated among the people. They were played during battles, court visits or sacrifices.

My final response hopes to have a healing effect by contacting different high and low sensors and naturalistic sound atmosphere. Choose the meditative atmosphere I want to create through physical performance.
