Play and Time

Context:

An Informal Catalogue of Slit-Scan Video Artworks and Research http://www.flong.com/texts/lists/slit_scan/

Slit-scan imaging techniques are used to create static images of time-based phenomena, which is an interesting way to play time I think. Through Slit-scan thin slices could be extracted from a sequence of video frames, and concatenated into a new image. So the new image shows the different thin slices of different times, which creates an interesting result.

Method:

I researched some articles and tutorials about Slit-Scan Video and created my own slit-scan program by Processing.

2. https://youtu.be/rnccPEqYQgo

Mainly use the video library and load pixels in Processing to achieve the result.

Respond

I adapted the original version of Slit-Scan, for example I changed the real-time video's tone and added glitch effect. There are two slit-scan results of my own two slit-scan codes. In the first test, I make the real-time video in two tones style, pink and yellow. I the second test, I show many frames and different frames showing the different parts of the real-time video.

Reflection

In this week's work, I transformed the real-time video to the static image through slit-scan technology. The images I got were distorted because they were composed of many thin slices from different time.  So the simple images showed different me with different poses and motions from different time. It was really a magical experience for me.
