THEME

Play and Time

CONTEXT

I was inspired by the experimental film <The Clock> by Christian Marclay.

Marclay took samples from thousands of movies, and he edited together "clock shots showing time" that appeared in the history of human cinema. The length of the film is 24 hours, and the time is shown by each close-up clock exactly matches each actual time of the day. This video work is made with a montage technique about time, a 24-hour movie, but it studies how video culture helps track the progress of things.

Also, the sounds play the role of "glue" in the film. Telephone ringing, rain, footsteps, dialogue, screams, crying, laughter, ticking clock and background music are intertwined. Communication is what I explored in this work and what I also want to Play in my week's theme.

METHOD

I want to use television as tools to communicate the connection of people who live in a different time zone and show the flow of time.

I used the TV test card as a SIGNAL to show the Day and Night which is time flow.

I selected 24 cities in the time zone as objects and edited the video material with After Effect and modelled a scene in C4D to play those videos at the same time.

In addition, I kept all sound different time zones of the video, so that they simultaneously play.

RESPONSE

Refer to this theme, I really want to find some interesting way to show how time can be express. In my work, the overlap of real-time means that people experience the same time, but in another sense, people experience different times. This concept will be very abstract. I hope that people watching can feel the multi-dimensionality of time.

In conclusion, I made a prototype of installation about time communication. I think if this device can be implemented, the TV programs it broadcasts will be real-time, although the outcome video is to show a virtual time-lapse process and TV programs.
