Theme: Play and self

Context:

Nowadays, appearance anxiety plagues many young women. The stereotyped aesthetics of society oppresses them to constantly pursue slender figures, plump lips, and so on. According to a survey by AC Nissen, 65% of people support improve their appearance, while 40% of them have had cosmetic surgery. I also used to feel anxious about my appearance, and by responding to this week's theme, I want to anti appearance anxiety and traditional aesthetic stereotypes about women and let myself  accept my own imperfections.  I was inspired an artist Polly Nor. In her works, women are imperfect. They do not have a perfect face and body, and they also have emotions such as sadness, desire, and anxiety.

Method:

I try to rediscover myself through deconstruction.

First, I took a selfie and removed the facial features in the photo by using Photoshop. Then I printed it and other images of stars and my friends. Cut out the facial features of each photo and mix them together. Next, I need to find my own facial features from it and put them together.

Responds:

Before game started, I thought I would find my own facial features quickly and accurately. In fact, I got a wrong nose and mouth.

What’s more, I invited my friends to play this game, and to my surprise, all of my friends picked the right facial features.(although one of them got right one and put it in the wrong place )

Reflection:

After reflection, I found that this game needs further improvement. There are several bugs need to be fixed:

- different sizes: some eye puzzles to be much smaller (or bigger) than the image of my face.

-difference color: filters cause different skin tones.

-different angle: It's hard to find portraits from the same angle, maybe next time I can try to take a set of harmonious portraits as material.

-more options: it will be interesting if there is more options, like different face shapes, or wrong face but with right hairstyle to misleading players.

Overall, this game reduce my anxiety about looks. In the past, I used to wish that my face could be as beautiful as those famous actress or idols. However, when their facial features are actually put on my face, I just feel weird, my own facial features are the best for my face.
