Play and Tinkering

Context
“Tinkering is a way of understanding difficult problems, of wrapping our heads around them and quantifying the unknowns.” - Gever Tulley
Tinkering is to learn and improved form the unknowns. A mobile game called “Heads Up!“ (2013) is multiple players, one of the player has to hold the smartphone upon their forehead and another player have to act out the words let others guess. This game using the tinkering of other’s action skill to build up the friendships. There is another game from a TV program ‘Genius Go Go Go’ in Taiwan, the game needs 5 players and stands in a line the four players have to wear on a loud music headphone. Then the first player will get a word in English and Chinese, and the first person has to create a sentence using English to explain the word without using the word to the person beside him/her. They have to send the message by once at a time till the last person have to guess the word in Chinese. This was my favourite game in this TV program, tinkering the language between English and Chinese.

Start of the week, I have talked with Rachael about I’m interested in VR. And she comes up these ideas to cooperate to create a VR tinkering game.

Method
In the team, my role in this exercise was tinkering Cinema 4D, Sahaj tinkering the controller to connect with Unity and Rachael tinkering the set up with VR oculus rift. As a team we are going to tinkering the program we are using, after the game build we are able to tinker how the player reacts toward the game, and the player can tinkering the way to play the game. This game is about one player trying to grab the model without knowing another player trying to the controller it by joystick.

Response
During the process, I have built the model by my past knowledge without watching the tutorial and tinkering the method of export a 3d animation model to unity. When I have done with my part I hand over the model to Sahaj have suggested not to use the joystick as our controller, the problems are unity asset that supports the joystick cost money. Then we decided to swap the joystick as using a smartphone to control it. Unity has a mobile remote application that supports our ideas. We try to connect the controller into the game, but we thought the remote only works on Mac computer and not work in Pc laptop. When we try to find the problems we found out might be the version of Unity affecting the remote not working. Finally, Sahaj figured all the problems and the feedback from the game was really fun and someone is familiar with Unity they get the game easily.

Reflection
Tinkering the players while they are tinkering the game. I like this idea of tinkering how other people reaction towards the game. In my studio project, I want the viewer to tinker the environment of cut and creepy in a VR space. This exercise took us three days to complete, at the same time we were a team. This also stands for I might need a week to tinker the technical problems for my project.
