Sarah Sze Combines domestic detritus and office supplies into fantastical miniatures, she builds her works, fractal-like, on an architectural scale. Whether adapting to a venue or altering the urban fabric, Sze's patchwork compositions mirror the improvisational quality of cities, balancing whimsy with ecological themes of interconnectivity and sustainability.

Method

I am trying to look at the world from another angle, thinking about the relationship between things, what are the connections between them, the differences between them, and the possibility of mutual transformation. And what kind of picture will this come out?

In the normal world, we explore the world through pictures, sounds, words, smells, and touch. What happens if one is missing? Or what happens if their roles change? Since the sense of smell and touch are more abstract, I want to try to change the role of the picture and the text.

Response

I began to imagine the transformation of various items into text in everyday pictures. They retain their original shape, but the real composition is the corresponding word. They sneak out of the wordbook, and each combination changes its original shape. It can be a word tree, a wind with a word, a word animal…… Maybe we will be surprised to find out that this is a new world.

Reflection

Although this is a very interesting conversion, in fact, this new world may not be as good as it was originally, it is a bit boring, because the words are black and white, so how can it struggle to get rid of the color limitation. But I think it provides a new idea, an opportunity to play with letters. If human beings live in such a world, what kind of existence, how they will live. Will you feel bored? Will you try to change the status quo, create colors, and create three-dimensional things? This may be an evolutionary process.
