Play and Materiality 




Work with our group (Phoebe, Jenny, Si, Sophia, Wayne, Stark, and me), use light as materiality to make short animations frame by frame. We came up with some different short animation ideas and everyone is in charge of an idea from preparing every frame's content to drawing with light.

  • Preparation: Camera, tripod, torch, different colors cello sheets (pink, yellow, green)
  • Location: Carlton garden
  • Time: 7pm---10pm

Phoebe and Jenny did some tests at first which help us find that the appropriate exposure time is around 15s. We went to Carlton garden at around 7 pm and found a good view where has trees around and city building background. Then we did our short animations one by one.


We documented all the processing of this week’s practice (including testing, discussing, walking to Carlton garden, drawing with light) and make a 2min video of processing and our 7 short freeze light animations.

I was in charge of the growing tree animation which was come up by me and also my favorite one. The result was interesting because there were real trees around but in the middle was a light tree.  


Light is a really beautiful material with a huge possibility. In many artworks, light is used to create atmospheres and it is not dominating often. However, we used light as the main material to create something. It is exciting for me.

Making single light drawing is not hard but making light drawing animation frame by frame is really hard I think because you just draw animation in the air and no reference here. So, you need to really know where you draw in the last frame and what should change in this frame.
