Theme:

Play and sound

Content:

The main concept was inspired from a visual music video made by Chaotic, named Sandstorm. In this video, the author visualizes the music with lines, and the complexity of the graphics also changes with the beginning, chorus, and end of the song, which highlights the rhythm of the work. In terms of color, the author USES bright colors as a whole. At the very beginning, when I had the idea of visual music, I searched many videos, but only this author's works are the most attractive, I think the main reason is his color collocation. Overall, the color of the work is bright, but there will be differences between light and dark. The bright color will be used to represent the high notes in the music, while the darker color is the low part. This kind of color matching is something I need to learn and practice. However, I wanted to make some adjustments to this concept, especially in the composition of the graphics, and add some more rich graphics.

Method

- analyze the rhythm and direction of music

- draw according to the rhythm of the music, and distinguish between the beginning and the chorus

- add music with Premiere

Response:

After thinking, I decided to make my visual music by carefully analyzing Chaotic's works, combining his color in visual music and the way to highlight the sense of rhythm, as well as some of my ideas, especially for the part where fluctuations are used to reflect the sense of rhythm. I divided the music I chose into two parts, the beginning, and the refrain. I didn't change much from the beginning but focused on the most rhythmic parts of the piece. In the first half, I reflected the direction of the music by changing the figure from small to large, hoping to gradually guide the audience, to start the part with the strongest sense of rhythm. In the second half of the music, that is, the chorus, the music fluctuates rhythmically. I carefully felt and analyzed the music to extract the characteristics of the rhythm in the music. These changes in rhythm are incorporated into the changes in patterns.

Reflection:

This process is new and exciting to me. I never wanted to make music as a theme, and I think the process of transforming hearing into vision is unique. To be honest, before this exercise, I did not think carefully about the relationship between hearing and vision, nor did I think that the two are mutually connected. When I decided on visual music as the theme, I hoped that even if I turned off the music, I could also feel the rhythm and direction of the music through the video. Because of this result, I think it is a good combination of pictures and music. To test the results, I showed the piece to my friend twice, the first time with the music off and the second time in its entirety. The first time, he was asked to imagine what the music associated with the video was like, and the second time he watched the full video, whether it was like the music he imagined. Fortunately, I got where I wanted to get.

In my opinion, music and pictures are a way of expression. When I analyze and observe them, I think it can be innovated, and this way of expression brings interactive experience with the audience, rather than just seeing or hearing. As Miguel Sicart  mentioned at ‘play matters’ (2013), play is a form of expression and exists as a language, but play is innovative. In this week's exercise, I tried for the first time to combine two different 'modes of expression' to present the result of music and pictures in another form, telling the piece of music like a story, and tending to give the audience a unique experience through this expression.
