Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Theme: Play and Place

Method: (EDIT/UPDATE) In class, we played a small game with Kate where we placed eyeballs anywhere in the classroom. It was so fun because when we placed the eyes, we could imagine a character with the shape in an environment. For this task I will try to do something similar and try to explore play and place by taking photos outside and placing my own 2d character into the environment. I will use the same character I created in Studio 3 and then I will then use photoshop to place the 2d character into the images.

Context: When I was small, I watched a movie called "Who framed Roger Rabbit". The animators showed the interaction of the 2d characters to the real world by playing around with the shadows. The animators made the characters react to the environments around them. They played with the light so that the cartoons would look realistic into the real world.
I got inspired by some Russian Arists who created cartoon characters and placed it to the real life photos. They used the combination of art and photography and blended fictional characters into the real world. The link below is an aritcle based on "Animated movie character reimagined living in Russia". They used our favourite tv show cartoon characters facing the sadness of reaity. The art shows digitally edited images of animated characters being portrayed in sad and harsh reality.

Edit/Update: Artist Playfully Merges Cartoon Characters with the Real World

Pietro Cataudella takes his sketchbook everywhere he goes. He took his imagination a step further by playfully merging buildings and everyday objects with unexpected characters and cartoon worlds.

Response/Reflection: (EDIT/UPDATE) I wanted to create this style of art because it would be really interesting to see a 2d character placed in a real world. As I went outside to click photos, I started imagining a life with 2d characters all around me. When I took the photos into photoshop, I created my 2d character and made different poses according to the scenes. As I did this, I was really happy with the results. It was looking so real with the lighting and the shadows of the character. It felt like the 2d character was actually in the image. This exercise helped me work further with my studio 3 project.

To me, I think audiences will find this type of art very playful because it turns their dreams into a reality. It would be a good experience for people to imagine a life of their favourite character in the real world. They could place their character into interesting places. They would find it so interesting and actually think as if their character is placed in a real world.
