Play and Abstraction- Week9

Theme

In response to the theme of " Play and Abstraction", I made a video showing me pretending I am an astronaut, steering in space in front of the abstract background I made with Blender nodes. The concept comes from the imagination of future play. I'm like a kid whose parents are busy working, and playing alone. Combined with virtual reality or mixed reality, imagine yourself cruising in space. Three background styles I made for the theme, which can be projected or presented on led screens( like the one for the virtual production). This part requires the imagination of the person who is reading this, because I currently don’t have a device.

Method

I firsty made the abstraction background of three kinds of wormholes. I made them mainly with Blender geometry nodes to give them a layered and systematic look. Whilst they look similar, I tried different construction methods to iterate the response. The first one is referred to as the portal in Rick and Morty, while the second and third ones are tunnels associated with time travel.  Then I tried to add play elements to them. It took me a long time to come up with the submission. However, I dressed in silver made of foil paper, imagining I am an astronaut, using the trash can as the steering wheel, and pretending I was driving in space.

Context

Turner (2003) offers much insight into these emerging thoughts and perspectives on art. He describes abstraction as objects disappearing and pure elements of colour, form, plane and movement commandeered the canvas. Based on this definition, I made three clips hoping to provide a non-linear narrative experience. I think the most important part of this reflection is my role as a participant in the video. It doesn’thaves to be me, in fact, the work can be interpreted by every people joining in this space journey. It is a game for solo, double players, or multiple players. You will be having more fun if you are with your best friends. The purpose of this imagery was not to depict but to express. Its subject was an experience. As an approach to audience participation, the play does not necessarily sit easily within these hierarchies of the world of art. I agreed that Play is more often associated with the world of children than the world of adults and is much more commonly associated with entertainment than art (Costello, 2009).  In my imagination, it is a game for children rather than adults.

Reflection

I watched many examples of abstract animation in class, and I was amazed by how they are unpredictable, diverse, and changing constantly. On the other hand, like the most beautiful creatures are mostly poisonous,  unknown, bright, complex and irregular patterns make people feel dangerous and fierce.  I plan to take advantage of these features, and then I can finally add the element of abstraction animation to my studio project and put it in the climax of the work.
